Many people in the South wanted Missouri to become a slave state. Missouri is located beyond the Mississippi River, meaning that slavery would expand into the western states. Missouri becoming a slave state would also make the number of slave states greater than the number of free states. With more power in Congress from slave states, slavery would surely expand into the West. Because the Northern people were against this happening, Missouri did not become a slave state.
